My Mom made me smile.

She'd been bedridden for a week and suddenly, now off life support, I walked into her hospital room. I leaned in stoking her hair and said, "I'm here." She scrunched up her eyes and stuck out her tongue. Bake, her youngest son, was also bedside and I'm sure that was for his sake.

I smiled.

She then took one last breath and passed in the moment. She was a tough old gal, full of grace and joy.

Mary Lou grew up an "army brat." Her dad. a "full bird colonel" was a flight training fleet commander and commanded the air over North Africa in WWII.

She was born in 1931 in San Antonio, Texas. Her mother of Galveston's high society had her hands full. Mom was a tomboy.

And having four sons didn't temper that a bit.

She dated astronaut Gordon Cooper (first to sleep in space), befriended Shirley Temple and attended the same school as Jackie Kennedy Onasis. She flew in the noses of B-25s, worked for doctor's offices, sold real estate and was President of the PTA.

— her son, Bart
