Robert Stewart Gourlay, III, was the son of Robert Stewart Gourlay, Jr.[1859-1921] and Agnes Grieve [1862-1923] who were married in 1881 in Greenock, Scotland. In addition to Robert, III, the couple had 9 other children: Isabella*; William, James, Thomas, Agnes Grieve, Angus Campbell*, Catherine Brember*, Alexander Grieve, and Mary Stewart Gourlay.
Robert’s paternal grandparents were Robert Stewart Gourlay, Sr., [1828-1884] and Catherine Brember [1831-1873] who were married on June 21, 1858; his maternal grandparents were William and Isabella O’Neill Grieve, who were married in 1881.
Following in his father’s mariner footsteps, at age 17, Robert III was an apprentice engineer. In his youth, Robert III played the bagpipes.
On July 6, 1910, at 26 years of age, Robert III married Florence Wall, 25, also of Greenock. The couple was married in Greenock, Scotland where they eventually settled at 20 Pottery Street. At the time of their marriage, Robert was a marine engineer and Florence was a shop assistant.
In July of 1911, Robert III and Florence had a son named Robert Stewart Gourlay IV who lived only hours. The following year, the couple had a daughter Catherine Wall Gourlay born on July 2, 1912; and on June 14, 1914, the couple had a second daughter, Agnes Grieve Gourlay.
From at least 1913 through the fall of 1919, Robert III served as a marine engineer presumably with the Royal Mail Steam Ship Packet Company. One of the company’s principal routes was from Great Britain to Chile and the Canal Zone to which Robert was assigned. From at least 1916 through 1919, Robert was an active Mason while stationed in Valparaiso, Chili, through the Star and Thistle Lodge. In late 1919, Robert was inducted into the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland in Greenock with a Royal Arch Degree of Free Masonry.
Some time in or before 1919, Robert’s father, Robert Jr., suffered a stroke; it appears the event occurred while Robert Jr. was visiting his sisters [Robert III’s aunts] Catherine Brember Gourlay and Margaret Stewart Gourlay, who had immigrated to America in 1898 and lived in Washington, D.C. With his father needing his care, Robert III left the steamship company and moved his family from Scotland to the United States: Robert III, Florence, Catherine and Agnes sailed on the Orduna arriving in NY, NY in October 1919.
The family eventually settled in Washington, DC, where a third daughter Margaret Brember Gourlay was born March 7, 1924. Robert III was employed by the Fussell Ice Cream Company as a mechanical engineer. On May 11, 1925, Robert and his daughters became Naturalized U.S. Citizens.
In 1949, Robert III and his wife Florence purchased a home in Kensington, MD. Sadly, Florence died [November 23, 1949] before the house was complete. Robert was a beloved father and grandfather; he died on October 5, 1950, at his new home in Kensington, MD.
In addition to his three beloved daughters, Robert left four adoring grandchildren: Meade Close Fairall, Jr., Stewart William Fairall, James Richard Fairall, and Margaret Cathleen Fairall. Two other grandchildren were born after Robert’s death: Robert Charles Volz and Maureen Lynne Volz.

* died in infancy.
