James enlisted in the Marines 3 May 1965 at the Marine Recruiting Office in New Orleans.
After arriving in Vietnam 29 April 1968, James was assigned to 2nd Platoon, Lima Company, 3 Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He died as a result of a knife wound to the body while fighting with an enemy soldier.
Survived by his parents; James A and Marguerite Acosta Sr, his uncle, Lester J Arnounlt and a very close friend-Sharon Valentin.
