Hugh was in the Civil War. He joined the 8th TN Infantry, Company E in 1861. He was captured in Cowan, Franklin Co., TN on July 6, 1863 and later taken to Louisville, KY. Once there he took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States and joined the Union Army. He was given the rank of Sergeant and later promoted to 1st LT. in the Kentucky 1st Light Artillery Regiment, Company Battery C, where he remained until he mustered out on July 26, 1865 in Louisville, KY.
After his discharge, Hugh then went to St. Louis, Missouri and became a policeman. The 1870 census shows he has a wife named Julia and a son named David.
He died of a stroke.

- Hugh Rawle, an ex-policeman, died very suddenly last night, at his residence, No. 1609 Biddle Street, of inflammation of the brain.
