James Alfred Miller Jr. of Southport NC, died suddenly Saturday, March 17, 2012, at his home. He was the son of James Alfred Miller and Leila Wootten Miller. His sister, Dr. Anne Russell, lives in Wilmington.

Retired from USAirways, Jim had worked as a journalist/photographer in the US Navy and for the Wilmington Star-News and Norfolk Virginian-Pilot. He was a genealogist and historian, with a paralegal degree and a degree in aviation. An alumnus of Fishburne Military Academy, he had lived in New Jersey, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Morehead City, and Raleigh. Jim was active in the Robert Ruark Society of Southport, and was a private aircraft pilot. His great-grandfather, the Rev. Edward Wootten, had served the Episcopal Church in Wilmington and Southport.

Jim leaves his wife Deborah Arnold Potter Miller and stepdaughter Olivia Jade Potter and her children Ryan and Averie; four nieces, Elizabeth Twiggs Jackson of Canada, Mary Catherine Twiggs of Tiburon CA, Jennifer Twiggs of Charlotte, and Leila Garriss of Wilmington; twelve great-nieces and nephews; aunt Mary Wootten of Wilmington and uncle Edward Wootten of Virginia; cousins Dr. Hugh Murray of Atlanta, Bradley Wootten of Manassas VA, Laura Yaeger of Charlotte, Diane Halpin of Great Falls VA, Laura Wolfe of Birmingham, Janet Bunge of Lexington KY, Susan Zimmerman of Pennsylvania; and Jim's favorite dog Chum.

Burial after cremation will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, April 4, 2012, in the Bradley-Jewett-Wootten plot in Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington.
