Prominent Banker of Fairfax County Expires; Was 84 Years Old
Funeral services for George W. Hawxhurst, 84, a prominent banker and leader in civic and fraternal activities of Falls Church and Fairfax County, Va., will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Presbyterian Church, Falls Church, with the Rev. A.B. Altfather conducting. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Hawxhurst was born near Hunters Station in Fairfax County and was living at Occoquan at the outbreak of the Civil War. His family moved North during the war. He returned to Fairfax County after the war and was elected clerk of Providence township for two terms. He was later an employee of the Census Bureau in Washington. In 1880 he was appointed inspector of customs in Alexandria. He resigned to become chief clerk of the superintendent of public instruction and was secretary of the Virginia Board of Education. From there he was appointed United States marshal in charge of the Alexandria office.
He moved to Falls Church in 1889 and later held every office in the town. For 28 years he was a town official. He served several terms as member of the town council, as clerk of the council, as mayor, and later as town treasurer and collector of taxes. In 1905 he was appointed postmaster of Falls Church, resigning that office to become cashier of the Falls Church Bank.
He was one of the leaders of the Fairfax County Republican party and for years served as clerk and judge of elections and as delegate to many state and national conventions.
He was a member of the Falls Church Odd Fellows Lodge, the Laurel Rebekah Lodge, and the third Lodge of Good Templars, serving as secretary of the grand lodge from 1872 until 1906. [The Independent Order of Good Templars was an international organization advocating total abstinence from alcohol.]
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ida Q. Hawxhurst; a grandson by a previous marriage [Frank Hawxhurst Jerdone]; a sister, Mrs. Anna Watkins of Washington, and a brother, Henry Hawxhurst of Oakton, Va.
