He was born at home in West Des Moines, Iowa, on Feb. 12, 1940. He graduated from Ankeny High School in 1958 and worked for the Rock Island Railroad in Des Moines, Kansas City and Chicago. After the Rock Island closed in 1980, he began a new career restoring and rehabbing houses in Waukegan, Highland Park and Galesburg. He took pleasure in working on his homes and his craftsmanship was admired by many.
Alan was a blessing to his wife of 51 years, Judy (Witt); his son Doug (Joanne) of Crystal Lake, Ill.; his daughter Julie Dahlberg (Scott) of Grayslake, Ill.; his six grandchildren and many others.
Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake, Ill. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at the funeral home, followed by burial in Crystal Lake Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Family House, 1339 E. Nebraska Ave., Peoria, IL 61603 or Galesburg Rescue Mission, 435 E. Third St., Galesburg, IL 61401.
