WENT HAND IN HAND TO THE OTHER SIDE

Mr. and Mrs. Hathaway Crossed the Dark River Together
(Special Correspondence of The Telegram)
FALL CITY, Wis., Dec. 31 -- Abner Hathaway was born in Ohio in 1831, Apr. 20, and has been an active as well as sincere Baptist minister since his early manhood, till the last few years when his health failed and he was obliged to resign regular work in the ministery [sic].
Lucina, his wife, was born in Indiana May 17, 1835. She had been apparently well, and was around at work until the Thursday before her death, about 4 p.m. when she suffered a paralytic stroke. She lay unconscious until Monday at 11:20 p.m., Dec. 23, when she passes away, aged 66 years, seven months and six days.
Mr. Hathaway had not been considered seriously ill, but had been a sufferer for the last two months, from the effects of a cataract on the eye. He kept up a firm belief that his wife would survive the shock, and get well in a short time, until Sunday night he could see she was failing and gave up all hopes and expressed that if it was the Lord's will that she be taken, he might go first. But no change was seen in him for the worse until about twenty minutes of terrible suffering before he died, and after twenty minutes of terrible suffering he passed away. The doctor pronounced it heart failure. He died Monday morning at 2:20 a.m.
They leave nine children to mourn their loss, six sons and three daughters, the youngest a girl of sixteen.
Those from a distance who arrived in time for the funeral were the eldest daughter, Mrs. John Rose; of Harlem, N. Dak.; Mrs. Campbell, of Hurley; Alec Hathaway, of Pine City, Minn.; Schilar Hathaway, of St. Croix Falls; and Ben Hathaway, of Spooner; also a brother of deceased, Mr. E. Hathaway and wife, of Hastings, Minn.; and Mrs. J. Hathaway, of Hersey; and a brother of Mrs. Hathaway, the deceased, Mr. D. Annis of River Falls. The funeral took place at Fall City last Thursday, conducted by Geo. Galloway of Menomonie. The services were by Rev. Peterson of Amy, before the largest congregation that ever gathered at this place.
They were buried at he Fall City cemetery, side by side in the same grave, as they had walked lovingly, hand in hand through their many years of married life.
The children all wish to express their sincere and heart felt thanks for the many favors and acts of kindness shown by neighbors and friends in the dark hours of sickness and death and also to the M.W.A. who have shown kindness to one of their members Sam Hathaway, through his trial of sickness.Born at Saltillo, Brown Township, Washington County, Indiana
