He was the son of the late John and Nettie (Webber) Scannell. Gene was a retired police officer for the former Jefferson County Police Department, where he retired after 32 years of dedicated service, and was a member of the FOP Lodge 614.
He is survived by his one and only loving wife of 67 years, Mary Louise (Hornek) Scannell; his sons, Gene Scannell, Jr. (Kathy), Rodney Scannell (Suzanne), Patrick Scannell, and Stephen Scannell (Susan); his daughter, Lisa Marie Clayton; his sisters, Helen Cease (Henry "Hank") and Betty Ann Mittler (Jack); 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A Mass celebrating his life will be on Monday, 11 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church 212 Mt. Mercy Dr., Pee Wee Valley, KY 40056, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday 9-11 a.m. at the church. Ratterman's Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Rd. is caring for the arrangements.
