Geraldine Eunice (Dietrich) Giehl, 86, of Des Moines, died March 22, 2012 at her home.

She was born January 13, 1926 in Perry, Iowa to Clarence and Minnie (Mills) Dietrich. She married Francis Giehl on October 1, 1949 in Des Moines. Together they raised seven children.

Geraldine was a homemaker. She loved quilting, and made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. An active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church for 63 years, she was a longtime volunteer at St. Joseph's Catholic School. She also volunteered her time over many years for the Polk County Democrats, the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) of Des Moines, and the Mercy Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband Francis and three of their children, Charles, Maureen and Andy. She is survived by a daughter, Rose Ellen Bloom of Richmond, California; sons, Paul, West Burlington; Greg, Pagosa Springs, Colorado; and Dennis, Des Moines; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday, April 1, at Iles Funeral Home, Grandview Park Chapel, 3211 Hubbell Avenue from 3 to 5 p.m., with a rosary to follow at 5 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 2, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Des Moines with Msgr. Robert Chamberlain presiding.

Burial will follow at Laurel Hill cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Link Associates (formerly the Association for Retarded Citizens) of Des Moines.
