Grandpa married my Great Grandmother when my mom was about 3 weeks old, so he's always been Grandpa, even if not by blood.
After Grandma got frail, he took care of her by himself. He had this great laugh that came from deep inside. For hours he would tell stories about the war (WWI) He walked down to the post office everyday for his mail, right up to a few days before he died.
When you hear that blood is thicker than water, tell them they are wrong. Grandpa wasn't my blood, but it doesn't feel that way. I miss his laugh, his potato salad, pumpkin pudding and how he would turn off his hearing aid to get some peace. He was a great man and I miss him more and more everyday.
