He graduated from National Normal University, Lebanon OH as valedictorian in 1878. He moved to Chillicothe in 1884 as Superintendent of Schools. In 1888 through 1889 he was Mayor of Chillicothe. He served as Post Master from 1903 until 1915. In 1825 he was appointed 36th Judicial Circuit Judge. After 2 years he returned to practicing law.
He served on the school board, 10 years on the Board of Public Works, and Director on the Board of the Chillicothe Business College.
In 1881 he married Lillian Felton. She died in 1896. They had three children: Helen, Laura, and George.
