Member of pioneer Valley Center family. Father: William K. Watkins, born in Illinois. Mother: Berthina C. Watkins, born in Arkansas. William filed homestead claim in 1880. Location: Vesper Road on the north and Valley Center Road on the south. Eleven children in the family: Charlotte E., Joseph Ewall, Dorcas E., James C., Anna E., William S., Martha A., John K., Alabama; Lilie; and George. The family crossed the plains to CA in an oxen-drawn wagon in 1853. Also traveling with the wagon train was Pathenia Catherine Miller, who William married in 1858. William's father, Ewell Watkins, was a Methodist Episcopal minister who traveled throughout Southern California. The family settled in Valley Center in 1880. William died in 1896 at the age of 66. Three of the Watkins' daughters married three of the Reed family's sons.
