Son of Herbert and Clara (Funderburg) Barnhart. Married Vila Butterbaugh/Royer. Father of Greta, Andrew and Eva.

BARNHART, Galen K. 89, of La Verne, California, died April 22, 2004, following a long
illness at Woods Health Services, La Verne, California. He was born August 16, 1914,
in New Carlisle, Ohio, the eldest son of Herbert and Clara (Funderburg) Barnhart.
Galen was a retired farmer and public school teacher. He lived on the family homestead
86 years, before moving to California. Galen graduated from Olive Branch High School,
New Carlisle, Ohio, in 1932 and in 1937 from Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana.
He then went on to receive his Masters Degree in Education from Columbia University,
New York, New York. He was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren; for 86 years
in the New Carlisle, Ohio congregation and more recently in the La Verne, California church.
He was a life member of the Church Board of Deacons; a member and past president of the
church Board; Sunday school teacher and former choir member. He also served on the
Southern Ohio Men's District Board of the church. He taught 12 years in the
New Carlisle-Bethel and Springfield Local school systems before returning to farming
and community activities. He remained a lifelong member of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation.
Mr. Barnhart was instrumental in the founding of Flying Angels Inc., a private flying club.
It was determined in 1952 that part of his farm was suitable for a private airport now
named in memory of Mr. Barnhart's son and owned by the Flying Angels. Mr. Barnhart was
a charter member of the Tecumseh YMCA and was made a "Trustee for Life" of the Board in 1992.
He was a committed fundraiser in the early development of the Tecumseh YMCA expansion
program and remained keenly interested in its ongoing growth progress. Galen is survived
by his wife of 63 years, Vila (Butterbaugh/ Royer) Barnhart of Hillcrest Homes, La Verne,
California; daughter, Rosemary of Los Angeles, California; daughter and son-in-law,
Greta and John Thomson of Christchurch, New Zealand; grandchildren
Julie, Todd, Heidi and Andrea Davidson, Sheridan, Wyoming; Jon
athan and Zachary Thomson, Christchurch, New Zealand. Galen was preceded in death
by two children, Andrew Barnhart and Eva Davidson; and his sister, Helen Barnhart.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 23, 2004, at 10:30AM during the morning
church service at the New Carlisle Church of the Brethren, led by Rev. Andrew J.O. Wright.
Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at New Carlisle Cemetery,
New Carlisle, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tecumseh YMCA,
524 North Dayton-Lakeview Road, New Carlisle, Ohio 45344 or the Church of the Brethren,
219 North Main Street, New Carlisle, Ohio 45344.
