Born of Danish Immigrants and a very poor family. She left home and began an interest in art. Her father although poor always made claims that she was a decedent of Franco-Danish nobility, a relation to Napoleon Bonaparte.
She met Adolph B. Spreckels the owner whose father was the founder of Spreckels Sugar Company, San Francisco and San Mateo Electric Railway, and Oceanic Steamship Company. After a five year courtship they married May 11, 1908, She labeled him her sugar Daddy.
She was a lover of art and attended Mark Hopkins Institute of Art. She is known to be the model for the Dewey Monument by Robert Aitken which is located in Union Square. She is known for her generosity and her active part in raising money during the great depression and WWI. Creating the maritime museum and many other art venues.
