Elkanah Harris Bates, my 2nd great grand uncle, was born in New Jersey, probably Burlington County, about 1831. He is the son of Moses and Ann Bates. He was living with his parents in Chester, Burlington County, New Jersey in 1850. He married Catherine C Megely on October 6, 1853 in Preble County, Ohio. His wife, Catherine C Magley [another spelling of Catherine's maiden Name], was born in Cinnaminson about 1837. They had at least three children. Elkanah and Catherine must have moved quite a bit for their daughter, Alice A Bates was born in Indiana in 1855, their son George A Bates was born in Ohio in 1856, and their son William H Bates was born in New Jersey in 1859. They were living in Cinnaminson, New Jersey in 1860 where Elkanah was working as a farmer.

Catherine died on September 2, 1862, and was buried in the Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery on September 18, 1862. Elkanah died on June 8, 1873. He was buried beside his wife and parents at the Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery.

There is a difference between Asbury United Methodist Church Records which has him being buried on 6/10/1874 & NJ Death & Burial records which has a death date of 6/8/1873.
