Iowa Governor. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1929, studied law, was admitted to bar in 1932 and practiced law in Chariton, Iowa. During World War II served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 104th Infantry Division, U.S. Army, in operations in Germany. After the war, he returned to Iowa, resumed the practice of law, was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives, (1936-40), served as Chariton City Attorney in 1941 and was Iowa Attorney General, (1953-55). In 1955, he was elected as a Republican as the 33rd Governor of Iowa, serving until 1957. During his term, the state highway system was expanded, educational funding was increased, the state's school system was updated, the state’s agricultural research institutions were improved and health care treatment for the mentally ill was advanced. After leaving office, he served as a civil defense administrator, (1957 to 1958 and was the director of the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization, (1958-61). Relocating to Colorado, he practiced until his retirement in 1985.
