Services Monday for R. H. Mathes
Edina , Mo., July 4. — The body of T-5 Richard Henry Mathes, who died in the Pacific theater June 2, 1943 [sic], has arrived here for final burial services which will be held Monday afternoon at 2 in the Christian church in Memphis. Military rites will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Burial will be in Lindville [sic] cemetery.
Young Mathes was born May 12, 1919, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mathes of near Memphis. He was engaged ln farming up to the time of his induction into the army in early 1942. He was married June 17, 1942 [sic] to Miss Dorothy Shalley, who survives.
Wounded in action on New Guinea, May 28. 1943 [sic]. Mathes died a few days later. Also surviving are a son, Richard Lee Mathes; his parents, and a brother, Russell Lee Mathes.

Funeral services for T/5 Richard H. Mathes, Memphis soldier whose body arrived there Sunday from an overseas temporary military cemetery, were conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Memphis Christian Church by the Rev. G. L. Eaton. Memorial services were in charge of members of the Scotland County Memorial Post 4958, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Burial was here in the Linville Cemetery with members of the Knox County Memorial Post 4822, Veterans of Foreign Wars, participating in graveside ceremonies. Chaplin Lloyd Karhoff gave the address.
T/5 Mathes, 24 years old at the time of his death, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mathes of Scotland County. He was married June 17, 1942 [sic], at Edina to Miss Dorothy Shalley, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shalley, of Greensburg. A son, Richard Lee, was born to them Sept. 2, 1943 [sic]. T/5 Mathes died June 2, 1944, at Aitape, New Guinea, as a result of injuries received in action five days earlier on Biak Island, Dutch New Guinea. He had participated in several major battles.
Richard Henry Mathes was born in Scotland County May 12, 1920, and attended the Poe school there. He was engaged in farming until he entered the army March 4, 1942, and received training at Camp Roberts, Calif., before being sent overseas with the 947th Field Artillery Battalion Jan. 1, 1944. His wife and son and parents survive.
