BOY DROWNED IN RIVER
SERVICES HELD SUNDAY FOR LITTLE VICTIM OF ACCIDENT

Funeral services for Theodore W. Boman, four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Boman of Secord Dam, who drowned last Thursday afternoon at the dam, were held Sunday, March 21, at St. Paul's Lutheran church. The Rev. H. F. Brietzke officiated and burial was in Highland cemetery.

Teddy was born July 3, 1943 and is survived by his parents; a sister, Lee Ann and brother, Danny; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Boman and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Searfoss, all of Gladwin.

After the river froze over this winter workmen repairing the power house at the dam lowered the water level so that work might continue. The ice dropped with the water, leaving a sharp bank along the shoreline. A chute-type ladder used some time ago in putting up ice bank and since had been used for climbing on and off the ice.

Lee Ann, 8 years old, was sent to call to her father, who was fishing through the ice, and Teddy followed her onto the ladder. Apparently the ice had melted enough at the foot of the chute loosening and allowing it to break through. Lee Ann jumped to safety, getting only her feet wet, but the little boy, too young to realize his danger, clung to the ladder which carried him under the ice.

Mr. Boman saw the danger to Teddy but was unable to reach him in time. With the help of his father, Fred Boman, and several neighbors he sawed out a large square of ice and recovered the body within 35 minutes. Artificial respiration was unsuccessful and they rushed him to the hospital.
