Benny Hoovers
Killed In Accident

In Car Collison Near Baldwin;
Other Driver Did Not
Heed Stop Sign

Mr. and Mrs. Benny Hoover were both killed Friday, when their car was hit by another car at the intersection of U.S. highways 59 and 50-N, near Baldwin, Kans. The accident happened about 2 o/clock in the morning. Mr. Hoover was killed instantly and his wife died a little more than eight hours later in the hospital at Lawrence. A baby son, two months old, who was in the car with them, was uninjured.

Benny Hoover was born in Stafford, attended schools and grew to manhood here. He was a son of Mrs. Zella Hoover. Mrs. Hoover was a Leavenworth girl. Her mother now lives at Sunflower, Kans.

Gene Terrill, of Marshfield, Mo., driver of the other car, failed to heed the stop sign at the intersection and is being held on charges of manslaughter. Two other men were with him in the car, but none of the three were seriously injured. One of the other men was the owner of the car.

The Hoovers were driving from Sunflower, their home, to Wichita to visit relatives. They were going south on No. 59 in their 1937 Packard. The other car, a 1939 Plymouth, was headed east of North Fifty.

A truck driver, who saw the accident, made the statement that the Plymouth was going at least 60 miles an hour through the intersection. Terrill stated that he was driving with his dimmers on and did not see the stop sign.

The Hoover car was overturned once by the collision and came to a stop 109 feet southeast. Mr. Hoover was thrown out and pinned under the wheels of the car when it came to a stop. He suffered a broken neck. Mrs. Hoover was thrown out the other side of the car and was lying about five feet from it. The baby remained in the rear seat. The Plymouth skidded 62 feet southeast before coming to a stop...
