Elizabeth Harriet Mirrielees was born to Lucy Andrews Hatch (of Illinois) and James Mirrielies (of Scotland) in Illinois. After the death of her grandfather, Reuben Benton Hatch in 1871, the Hatch and Mirrielees families left Illinois to pioneer and settle Big Timber, (Sweet Grass County) Montana. Bessie, as she was known, grew up surrounded by a large and loving extended family. Her grandmother, Ellen DeWitt Bush Hatch, lived with Bessie's family until her death in 1893. Bessie married William A. Moore, a physician in general practice. They were the parents of one daughter, Ellen Jean Moore. After eighteen years of marriage Bessie and William divorced and Bessie went into Social Work. She died in California in 1943.
