Roger Dearborn Lapham was the head of the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company beginning in the 1920s. He served as mayor of San Francisco from 1944-1947. He also served as a U.S. Army officer in World War I, Chief of the American Economic Aid Mission to Greece, 1950-1951, and head of the Economic Cooperation Administration in China, 1948-1949.

He was the son of Lewis Henry Lapham, an American entrepreneur who made a fortune consolidating smaller business in the leather industry and who was also one of the founders of Texaco Oil Company. He built Waveny House in New Canaan, Connecticut, as a summer residence for his family to escape the heat of New York City. The mansion and property are now a public park and arts center in New Canaan. Roger Lapham was the paternal grandfather of Harper's Magazine editor Lewis H. Lapham, and the maternal uncle of actor Christopher Lloyd.
