RICHARD HYDE BURRILL
GLENBURN and BUCKSPORT – Richard Hyde Burrill, 79, died Nov. 30, 2009, at Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born Richard Elbert Hyde, Aug. 3, 1930, in Lincoln the third son of John Frederick Hyde and Jenny Louise Ballantyne. Richard’s mother passed away within a few days and he was adopted by the family of Jenny’s second cousin, Berg Chadwick and Erma Frances (Furrow) Burrill, and he became Richard Hyde Burrill. He was educated in Bucksport schools and graduated from Bucksport High School in 1949, where he was very active in Future Farmers of America. Richard joined the U.S. Marine Corps, in March 1952, was trained at Parris Island and stationed in Hawaii. He was a member of Marine Air Group 13’s “Death Angels” squadron and was discharged in March 1954. He married Janice Maddocks, May 26, 1956, in Orrington, and adopted her children, Timothy Leon, Dana Stuart, Peter Adrian and Molly Faye and accepted them as his own. Richard and Janice had two more children, Susan Elaine and Carl Thomas, and adopted Edward James Richard. Richard and Janice brought the children up in the love of God and would conduct churchly services at home when travel to church was impossible. He was active in the Methodist church where he taught Sunday school and led the youth group. He first worked at Brawn’s Appliance, Bucksport, and then farmed on the River Road, North Bucksport, raising broilers for market for 20 years. His farm was a great joy to him. He was very active in the agricultural business and Floral Grange. With the move of the broiler business to the south, they moved to Glenburn and he was employed doing maintenance for MacDonald’s Corp., Bangor. His beloved Janice passed away Sept. 29, 1989, and was buried in Riverview Cemetery, Bucksport. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Spooner, Nov. 30, 2002, in Bucksport. Joyce put a smile back on his face and gave him six more children. They split their time between New York and Maine. Richard enjoyed history, woodworking, reading, gardening, camping, and had an extensive collection of Bibles, which he studied regularly. He also enjoyed spending time at his favorite spot in Maine – Cape Rosier, and attending First Church of the Nazarene, Bangor and North Bucksport United Methodist Church.Richard is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Timothy and Linda of Penobscot, Dana and Shelly of Northfield, Motty and Glenn Poole of Orrington, Susan and Mark Bennett of Bucksport, Carl of Glenburn and Edward of Orland; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As his health failed, he was tenderly cared for by his daughter, Susan, and received exceptional care from those at Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife; and son, Peter. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Richard Devendorf, pastor of First Church of the Nazarene, Bangor. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Bucksport.
