John M. Leatherbury, 49, of Sugar Grove passed away suddenly on Friday, May 14, 2004 of a brain aneurism while on a business trip in Normal, IL. John was born August 21, 1954 in Coldwater, MI, the son of Ralph and Mildred (Morh) Leatherbury.
    He leaves to cherish his memories and creative spirit, his wife, Teri C. (Yeates) Leatherbury; a sister, Jana (Leatherbury) Conklin; and nieces Erin and Emily Conklin of Blissfield, MI; father and mother-in-law, Neval and Norma Yeates of Naperville; sister-in-law, Holly Yeates of Naperville; brother-in-law, Michael Banks and dear friend Lorraine Michuda of Somonauk; and aunts, uncles and cousins in Minnesota, Michigan, Kansas, New Mexico, Illinois, South Dakota and Washington.
    John was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Candace (Yeates) Banks; his grandparents; and aunts and uncles.
    John and Teri were married on August 30, 1980 in Naperville, IL. They were looking forward to celebrating their 24th wedding anniversary in 2004.
    John grew up in Sherwood, MI and was a graduate of Union City High School, Union City, MI. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Central Michigan University in 1977 with a Bachelor's Degree in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts. While attending college and after graduation he was a news reporter and photographer for the Union City Register Tribune.
    On December 5, 197 John became a second-generation Farm Credit System employee when he joined the Federal Land Bank of St. Louis as a marketing specialist. In 1986 John was asked to join the senior management team of Farm Credit Services of Northern Illinois, Kaneville, IL as their chief marketing and communications officer. He was currently serving as Vice President of Marketing for First Farm Credit Services, Normal, IL.
    John was a member of the National Agri Marketing Association and the Cooperative Communicators Association (CCA). He served on the CCA Board of Directors for many years and was President of the organization from 1988 to 1989. He received CCA's Michael Graznak Award for Outstanding Young Communicator in 1986. John also was the recipient of several awards for excellence in communications from CCA and the Farm Credit System.
    John had a passion for collecting antiques and collectibles, gardening, travel, the history of his hometown area in Michigan, and family genealogy. He was a member of the Sugar Grove Family Past Finders Genealogy Group, the Branch County (MI) Genealogical Society, and the Fox Valley Genealogical Society. He spent countless hours helping Teri create a beautiful garden they both loved in the yard of their Sugar Grove home and was "the family's chief gardener", planting and nurturing a large vegetable garden each year at Mike and Candy's home on Somonauk. John and Teri discovered together many of their favorite spots around the world through travel; with some of his best-remembered being the farms he visited or stayed at in Scotland and Ireland.
    His family, friends and colleagues will remember John as a quiet, warm and thoughtful person with an incredible sense of humor that would shine through at just the perfect moment.

    Visitation will be held on Monday, May 17, 2004 3 to 8 PM at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Dr., Sugar Grove, IL. A service will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at 10 AM at The Healy Chapel, Sugar Grove. Interment will follow at the Naperville Cemetery, Naperville.
