Elizabeth "Lizzie" was born on June 9, 1875 in Giles County, Virginia to Barnabas "Barney" Weis/Wees and Sarah A. Pool/Poole.

Lizzie married Amos Whitten Rogers, Sr. on February 12, 1895 in Montgomery County, Virginia. They bore 12 children. Sadly, 2 died in infancy and their daughter Gertie died of tonsillitis at the age of 9.

Lizzie's youngest child, Amos W. Rogers, Jr., wrote the following:

"My father's passing [in 1928] was devastating to mother and really all of us. It became her responsibility to care in every way for me, Nora, Florence and Rama [her youngest children]. My father's sickness, hospital bills, bankruptcy, etc. left us with very little money. There was no social security, no welfare and no other form of income that I can remember. The Masonic Lodge sent us one bushel basket of groceries. Mother sold a line of ladies 'Ready to Wear' door to door. Customers were scarce. Phyllis got a job as a waitress. Florence got a part-time job in a dry goods store.

My three brothers [Lloyd, Bill and Tom] came to our rescue. They paid the mortgage on the house and gave mother $20.00 a month. It doesn't sound like much, but it was enough to keep us in groceries. Bread was 5 cents a loaf, fat back bacon was 10 cents a pound, flour was 70 cents for 24 pounds. We charged some of our groceries at Jake Reinhart's Grocery until we could no longer pay.

We raised a few chickens in order to have meat and eggs. We also sold some of the eggs for 25 to 30 cents a dozen. Mother would usually buy two female pigs about the first of April … We would feed the two female pigs all Spring, Summer and into late Fall. By that time, they would weigh about 250 pounds each, and time for slaughter. To feed the pigs, we would gather slop door to door from neighbors. That's unheard of these days. Mother would always give the neighbors some of the meat … We also had a small garden every summer … Mother and I did most of the garden work. "

When Lizzie's son, Amos Jr., was discharged from WWII on January 3, 1946, he returned home to Mount Hope, West Virginia. He found his mother in a deteriorating state of health. Lizzie died on May 3, 1946 of lung cancer at Beckley Hospital in West Virginia. She was 70 years old.
