Tombstone in The Baron's Church of Dierdorf (it was a German Reformed Church)

REV. & DOCTOR: JOHANNES HERMANN ALTGELT (Outcalt)

Johannes Hermann Altgelt (b.11 Sep 1644 – d. 22 Nov 1705) was the pastor of the Baron's Church of Dierdorf, in Dierdorf, Germany. Dierdorf is a small town in the Rheinland-Pfalz region of Germany. The Baron's Church of Dierdorf (it was a German Reformed Church) is just a short walk from the bus station and the Dierdorf downtown plaza. According to the current pastor in 1993, the church has been repaired over the years and at one time, the cemetery was removed. All the old gravestone markers were incorporated in the walls of the Church. On the left wall, between the last window and the back corner, one will find Johannes' tombstone embedded in the wall. At the top of the stone is the Altgelt coat of arms. The pastor in 1993 translated the stone's inscription: "Here lies in God the former Reverend and Doctor Johannes Herman Altgeld, Pastor of the Baron's Church of Dierdorf which lies in the upper region, Inspector of other congregations in the neighborhood and the "Seelsorger," Guard of Souls, who died in the afternoon at 5 o'clock, aged 61 years, 2 months, and 11 days November 22, 1705.

Translation of Church Plaque:

PROTESTANT CHURCH in DIERDORF Actually it seems to be a homogeneous/ideal construction. However, the only part of the building that is very old original, is the Romanesque Chime Tower. The old church, dedicate to St. Jacob, was built in the year 1200. In 1903/04 the present church was built from the stones of the Dierdorf Wied-Runkel Castle which was torn down in 1902. The reformation into a protestant parish took place during the Count Johan IV. of Wied. The synod of Dierdorf in 1587 gave it its final contents and shape. Three bells are calling the religious community/congregation: 1. The prayer bell since 1463, 2. The reconciliation bell since 1894, 3. The revival bell since 1960. It has the inscription: "Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts!" (Hebrews 3.8.15 Westerwald Association in cooperation with the Protestant Parish Dierdorf.
