BIOGRAPHY
Leona Lena Ebers was born April 27, 1926 in Beaver Crossing, Nebraska to James Ellsworth and Emma Bertha (Bracken) Abrahams and with quiet grace and dignity left her earthly bounds on December 15, 2011 at the age of 85 years, 7 months, 18 days. She attended school in Beaver Crossing and Albion and was a 1944 graduate of Seward High School. Leona married Merle W. Ebers on March 25, 1944 at Marysville, Kansas. Their union was blessed with three sons and three daughters. Leona was a devoted wife and mother, living in the communities of Franklin, Hastings, and Guide Rock before moving to the family farm at Seward in 1959. Leona served in several secretarial positions including Beaver Crossing School, Educational Service Unit 6, and the office of the County Superintendent where she organized and conducted the Seward County Spelling Bee for many years. Leona was an associate member of the Seward United Methodist Church, active in church organizations, MYF, church choir and a lifetime member of WSCS (now UMW). She was a 50+ year member of the Order of Eastern Star, holding numerous offices as recently as 2009.
Leona is preceded in death by her parents, James and Emma Abrahams; grandson, Anthony Ebers, great-grandson Jacob Vinton; brothers, Melvin Abrahams and LaVern Abrahams; sisters, Melvina Landon and Rozella "Sally" Erks.
Leona is survived by her husband, Merle W. Ebers, Seward; sons and daughters-in-law, William and Cheryl Ebers of Lincoln, Marvin Ebers of Jacksonville, FL, Larry and Nelda Ebers of Paola, KS; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Range and special friend, Bill Gibson of Lindale, GA, Sandra Zulkoski of Seward, Kyla and Mark Unick of Edwardsville, IL; 23 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Callahan of Fairmont; sister-in-law, Irma Abrahams of Hutchinson, KS; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
