Born March 5,1838 in Suhl, Preussen (Prussia). Emigrated to the U.S. in 1844.
Enlisted as a 22 yr. old on July 3,1861 in Co. F, 5th Iowa Infantry. Also found as Sterman and Stumer. Mustered out at the expiration of his term of service at Chattanooga, Tn. on July 17,1864.
He is listed as wounded in action at the Battle of Mission Ridge, Tn. on Nov.25,1863 in the 1897 Veteran Roster.
According to "Gravestones of Keokuk Co., Iowa" page 203 he is mentioned as having died at age 78 in Sigourney, Iowa and buried at West Cemetery.
