The Honorable Nathaniel McLean was a man of many trades, all of which he performed in a superior manner. He took over the publication of The Western Star newspaper in Lebanon, Warren, OH, after his brother, The Honorable John McLean, moved on into his political and legal careers.

Later, he moved into the Minnesota Territory to Ft. Snelling in what was then known as Dakota County. He published a newspaper (McLean and Owens) and later became the agent for the Sioux Nation and negotiated several very important treaties on behalf of the Sioux. He was very unhappy with the treaties as they were finally adopted and thought the Sioux did not receive fair treaties, despite his best efforts.

He was elected to three terms in the Ohio Legislature and later served as a Comissioner of Ramsey County in Minnesota.

He enlisted as a First Lieutenant in Matthias Corwin's Company of the Ohio Militia during the War of 1812.

He married Hester Nutt and they had eleven children.

He died of cancer and is buried at Oakland Cemetery in St. Paul, Ramsey, MN.

He was described as "Tall, slender gentleman, a little lame in his older years, rapid talker, a truthful, honest, good man."

One daughter not shown on this page, Mary Belle McLean, married John G. Lennon. Lived in Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN. Burial place has not been found yet.
