George "Joey" Curtis, 79, of Las Vegas, passed away Thursday, May 13. He was born April 9, 1925 in Oradea-Mare, Romania. He came to the U.S. at the age of three. He became a boxer while he was in the Navy and went professional after his discharge in 1946. He married his lovely wife Mary and has been with her for the last 57 years. They had a daughter, Laura. Joey came to Las Vegas in 1974 where he ran his own construction company. He is best known in Las Vegas for his work and dedication to the Boxing world. He was a prolific referee doing weekly televised fight from places like the Silver Slipper and Showboat plus his championship fights both in the U.S. and abroad. He later became a Boxing Inspector President for several years in the Las Vegas Chapter of the Veterans Boxing Association Ring #711. Joey would frequently host "Old Timers" Boxing shows featuring the "greats" such as Jake LaMotta, Joey Maxim and Rocky Graziano, at places like the Frontier and the Maxim. Joey was inducted to the World Boxing Hall of Fame. Those who knew him know how he was always helping anyone who needed help and will always be remembered as "One in a Billion" kind of guy. "A diamond in the rough". Joey is survived by his loving wife Mary; daughter, Laura (Richard) Latrenta; grandchildren, Emily, Robert (Bobby) Latrenta; and sister, Patricia Atkinson. A celebration of Joey's life will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 17, and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, May 18, both at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 19 at Palm Valley View Cemetery.
