From the SOUTH BEND (IN) TRIBUNE, April 3, 2012:

CHESTERTON - Frank I. Tonk Jr., 92, passed away at 12:35 pm on Saturday, March 31, 2012, in The Waters of Duneland, in Chesterton, IN. Frank was born on May 13, 1919, to the late Frank and Frances Tonk Sr.

On September 9, 1940, Frank married Cecelia (Wensits), who passed away on April 7, 1992. Frank was also preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

Frank is survived by his daughter, Janis Koch of Brunswick, Ohio; and son, Raymond (Susan)Tonk of Chesterton, Indiana; grandchildren, John Koch III, Ryan (Lauren) Koch, Jennifer Koch, Bryan Tonk, Amy (Michael) Wroblewski, Kevin Tonk and Bethany (Geoffrey) Caldwell; and three great-grandchildren.

Frank served his country in the United State Army and earned an ROC, an American Defense Ribbon, AP Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Purple Heart Medal and a Bronze Star Medal.

Frank was an Assistant Fire Chief with the South Bend Fire Department from which he retired after 35 years of service. He was a parishioner of St. Mathew's Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, Notre Dame football, the Chicago White Sox and the Green Bay Packers.
