A Painful Accident
Mrs. Kate Sherman Has Three Ribs Fractured Monday

"Mrs. Kate Sherman, who is remembered by residents of this city as Miss Kate Cross, met with a painful accident Wednesday, while on her way to this city, which will confine her to her home for several days. The following account is taken from the Record-Union.

Mrs. Kate Sherman, wife of the well known horse trainer, started for Woodland yesterday with a party of friends in a double team. They drove up the levee on the Yolo side as far as the Monument Ranch, and there, the young man who was driving the team found he had made a mistake in not turning off the levee some distance below.

There is a deep cut on one side of the levee, and when the vehicle gave signs of tipping over, Mrs. Sherman jumped out. Just as she did, the rear of the carriage turned into the cut, and one of the wheels struck the lady on the chest. She was so badly hurt that Dr. Ross, of this city, was sent for.

The doctor found that three of the ladies ribs were broken. He reduced the fractures and had her brought home. None of the others in the party were injured."

Back Comb Cuts Serious Scalp Wound
"Mrs. Kate Sherman, victim of a peculiar accident from which she has been seriously ill for two days was much improved today and was considered entirely out of danger.

While attending to customary household cares Wednesday, at her home on Second Street, Mrs. Sherman suddenly became dizzy and in an instant fainted. In the fall she struck on the back of her head and a heavy comb, pierced the flesh, causing and ugly and painful wound.

In order to guard against possible infection, the attending physician has been unable to close the wound with the result that it has bled freely and caused unusual pain.

Mrs. Sherman was able today, however, to sit up for a few hours and it was expected that stitches could be taken to mend the flesh wound."

February Is Jonah Month For Shermans

"February has developed into a Jonah month for Mrs. Kate Sherman, residing on Second Street, this city, and her son Earl [sic}, both of whom were quite seriously injured of late. Earl Sherman is at a hospital in Vallejo, suffering from broken bones sustained Monday while on his way to Woodland by motorcycle. The lights of an advancing car blinded him and he dashed into an obstruction, quite seriously injuring himself.

Mrs. Sherman is recovering from scalp wounds obtained about the 10th of the month when she fainted and pierced her scalp with the prongs of a back comb when she fell to the floor."
