In the 1939 Holyoke City Directory Stephen is listed as a professional wrestler. He was a junior heavyweight wrestling champion known by the name Steve Brody.

Stephen joined the Marines in 1942. He saw combat in the Marshall and Mariana Islands. He was given a battlefield commission of 2nd lieutenant and went beyond enemy lines to save the lives of wounded American fighters at Saipan. He was killed in action on Iwo Jima on February 22, 1945 He was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star.

He was the son of Michael and Elizabeth Opalenik, brother of Elizabeth, John, Michael Jr. Charles, George, Ann, Mary Ann & Alice.
