The oldest of 4 sons born to James Newport Ellis and Lillie Mae Stephens Ellis. Jim Ellis died when Ernest was 6 years old. My Grandmother Lille Ellis told of putting him on a train to go work the fields in South Georgia when he was about 8. The farmer sent his wages to her by mail. He married Edna Mae Key on April 15, 1933 and a total of six children were born to them.

These children were Naomi Lynn, Joyce Hasseltine, James Jimmy Jr., John David, Virginia Murlez and Marion Pierce Ellis .

In 1940 Earnest had a Commercial Dairy on his farm and my Dad, his brother Des, worked for him. My main memory of Ernest was that he was a strong Christian, a Deacon in our Church, Mount Rachel Baptist there in Dalton.

Ernest married Mabel Williams Sherlin in 1965.
