Martin's obituary appears in the Kennett Dunklin Democrat, Jan. 13, 1939, on page 1, column 1, under the title: Aged Resident Died At Home Of Daughter Here Early Monday

Martin was the son of Martin Van Buren Murphy and Sarah Jane Newton. He was most likely born in Union County, Illinois. On 6 Dec 1884, Martin married Martha Susan Lookinbee in Franklin County, Illinois. Martin and Martha had the following children: Florence Opal, Olla (could be Olive) "Ollie" Blanche, Rose Altha, and Martin Van Buren.

There might have been an additional child: Charles Nelson Murphy b. 19 Sep 1889 Union County, Illinois. Proof is scant and there seems to be no death record for him.

Martin died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Florence Hasty with death attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage.

The obituary lists the following survivors:one brother Nelson Murphy of Chicago, who was here for the funeral; one son, Buren Murphy of this city; three daughters, Mrs. Florence Hasty, Mrs. Lon Berry and and Mrs. Olive Morris, and a half-sister, Mrs. Addie Waddell.

Martin's funeral service and burial was held on Tuesday, 10 January, at the Sumach Church by the Rev. Irl Richardson.
