Joan was a housewife and mom while Vernon worked in the restaurant business. Several of his restaurants are Memphis landmarks, The Knickerbocker and The Little Tea Shop. In addition he owned a local fast food chain called Danver's which is still in operation as is the very popular Mortimer's. Vernon, along with Danny Thomas and others, was one of the founders of the FedEx/St. Jude Classic which was originally held at Colonial Country Club near Audubon Park.
Their son Chris Bell was a Memphis Musician and guitarist and helped start the band Big Star, named after a local grocery store chain.
