Richard Ames was a Montville resident on 21 November 1861 when he enlisted as a Private in Co. D of the 12th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry; he was discharged 10 March 1862. He was a Hebron resident on 26 April 1863, when he was drafted into Co. B of the 6th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. Richard Ames was captured 20 May 1864, Bermuda Hundred, Virginia and imprisoned at Andersonville, Georgia. He was paroled December 1864 and discharged 21 August 1865.
