Catherine Schildknecht was a daughter of German-born Annamaria Magdalen "Mary" (née Schmidt) and Heinrich Abraham Schildknecht, who were among the early settlers of the Middletown Valley in Frederick County, Maryland. She was born on 13 January 1800 near Middletown, was christened on 30 March 1800 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, and would later be married at that church.

Catherine "Schilknecht" and Jacob Zittle were married on 29 April 1821. The couple continued to live in the Middletown area, and are known to have been the parents of five children: William, John H., Mary Ann, Horatio, and Barbara (died in infancy).

"Chatarin" Schildknecht, daughter of Henrich and wife Anamari, b. 13 Jan 1800, bp. 30 Mar 1800 ("Chatarin" Schenebergern, sponsor), according to: Church Record of the Lutheran Congregation of Zion Church at Middletown, near Frederick, Md., Charles T. Zahn, trans. (Westminster, Maryland: 1934), p. 29.

The Zion Lutheran Church used only the German language until 1826.

Catharina "Schilknect" and Jacob Zittle were on 29 April 1821 licensed to be married, according to: Church Record of the Lutheran Congregation of Zion Church..., p. 77. Alternatively, Catherine "Schilknecht" and Jacob "Little" were married on 25 April 1821, according to: Frederick County, Maryland, Index to Marriage Licenses: Female, 1778-1865, p. 337.
