Spc. Carl F. Curran II, 22, of Union City, formerly of Bradys Bend, died May 16 in Al Karmah, Iraq, when a bomb detonated and flipped the Humvee in which he was riding into a canal.
He was mobilized Dec. 18, 2003, by the Pennsylvania National Guard, 1st Battalion, 107th Field Artillery, Oil City based Charley Battery as part of the Army's need for military police. After six weeks of special police training at Fort Dix, N.J., he arrived in Iraq on Feb. 18, 2004.
Born Dec. 6, 1981, at the Navy hospital in San Diego, Calif., he was the son of David C. and Manuela T. Blanco Curran.
He was a 2000 graduate of Karns City High School, where he was a member of the marching band for six years and was sectional leader of the drum line. He also participated in several musical stage productions at the high school. He joined the Pennsylvania National Guard in a special program for juniors at the school.
He was a loving and devoted husband and father and enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing, swimming, computer games, magic cards, Dungeons & Dragons and Hero Clix. He collected MatchBox Cars, GI Joe figures and comic books. He was active in scouting from Tiger Cubs to Boy Scouts with Troop 973 of Cowansville and obtained a rank of first class in the Boy Scouts.
He was employed at the Butler Days Inn as a member of the setup crew for the banquet department. He also had worked at Staples at Moraine Pointe Plaza.
He was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Sugarcreek Township, Armstrong County, and was an altar server at the church. He was a charter member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 488 and a member of the American Legion Post 488, both of Bradys Bend, and of the Post 488 Firing Squad. He also was a member of the squadron that placed flags on veterans' graves for Memorial Day.
Surviving are his wife, Dianna Joy Proper Curran, whom he married Dec. 5, 2003; a daughter, Lillian Michelle Curran of Union City; his parents of Bradys Bend; a brother, SK2 David C. Curran Jr. and his wife, Audrey of Valdez, Alaska; two sisters, PC3 Jessica L. Curran and her fiancé Andrew Ritterbusch of Bremerton, Wash., and Jennifer A. Curran of Bradys Bend; his paternal grandmother, Rita F. Miller Curran of Bradys Bend; maternal grandparents, James H. and Anne M. Cechvala Blanco of El Cajon, Calif.; three stepsisters, Patricia Franklin of Snohomish, Wash., Susan M. Raniere-Taylor and her husband, Brian, of Snohomish, and Janet M Uytingco and her husband, Elmer, of Goose Creek, S.C. Also surviving are aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Carl F. Curran, who died Sept. 15, 1992.
CURRAN - Friends of Spc. Carl F. Curran, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at CHARLES B. BUECHELE FUNERAL HOME, 105 Fourth St., East Brady. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Route 68, Bradys Bend. The Rev. Anthony Ditto will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Bradys Bend.
American Legion Post 488 will conduct a memorial service 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
A parish prayer service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lillian Michelle Curran Education Fund, c/o Farmers National Bank, P.O. Box 428, East Brady, PA 16028.
