He and his youngest child Luther was in a tragic fire on Feb 14, 1940. Luther in building a fire, not knowing that the embers were hot, poured Kerosene in the stove. It caused the stove to explode and the house caught fire. Luther died in the fire. His father Jeff, was in another part of the house. He tried to save his son but couldn't get to him. Two of his sons, Lawrence and Woodrow, and grandsons, Donald & Russell were out in the yard. They couldn't get to Luther. They ran around the house and saw Jeff thru a window. They broke the window and pulled Jeff out. He was severed burned. There were no ambulances back then. They had to walk and borrow a lumber truck to take him to the hospital. He died, around 9:00 p.m. on the way there. His grandson Donald, still living, told me exactly what happened.
My mothers was not there but remembers this happening very well.
