According to the final coroner's report Isabel killed herself by eating Kellog's Ant Paste in her suite at the Hotel Cortez. Initially newspapers reported her husband was by her side, but later report tell of a call to the hotel operator, a womans screams, and the line going dead. They rushed to her room but could not open it and had to crawl through a window. Initially her death was ruled a heart attack but a tube of the arsenic laced ant poison was found in a trash can and so they retrieved her buried body determined she died of arsenic poisoning. There were questions, but the coroner refused to investigate further.

Walter died of of a sudden heart attack a few days later in Hollywood. Interestingly, Helene's previous husband, Jesse Whitehead was found dead from a gunshot to the head in his hotel in San Francisco just three years earllier.
