He was named one of the "100 outstanding heroes of World War I" by Gen. John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe.
He received the Distinguished Service Cross in a ceremony at the reunion of the Rainbow Division in Philadelphia in 1960, 42 years after the award was originally made in France. He had been hospitalized with wounds when the awards were made in 1918.
