After a brief move to Iowa, Myrlin's family returned to Montana when Myrlin was 8. He attended Harmony School in the Helena Valley through the eighth grade. In June 1928, Myrlin married Mabelle Norling where together they farmed in the Helena Valley. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, David and Eugene. David died of leukemia when he was 8 years old. Mabelle passed away in January 1956 after sharing 28 years of marriage.

In December 1956, Myrlin married Kay Duffy and several years later, they moved to a mountain ranch in Canyon Creek where they ranched until Myrlin's semi-retirement in 1971. They then moved to the Helena Valley where he lived until his death.

During Myrlin's lifetime, he was actively involved in 4-H, Lewis and Clark Fair Board, Last Chance Stampede and Fair, Lewis and Clark Conservation District, Lewis and Clark Weed District, Farmers Home Administration Board, Harmony School and Warren School Boards, Draft Board, Tax Appeal Board, Farm Bureau Board and Little Red School House Board. But of all of his achievements, what he valued and enjoyed most was time with his family and friends, a good dance at the Community Center or riding his horse out over the mountains to check on his Angus cattle.

In April 1997, Kay passed away after 40 years of marriage. A month later, grandson Dave Donaldson and family moved into Myrlin's home in order to assist him. As a result, Myrlin was able to live his final years at home, something he so appreciated.
