He attended St. Lawrence Grade School and graduated from Boys Central High School in 1936. He graduated from Butte Business College, attended Carroll College, and completed his undergraduate degree at Gonzaga University in 1948. He earned his law degree from the University of Montana in 1951 and was admitted to the Montana Bar the same year.
Following his graduation from law school in 1951, Larry worked for the Social Security Administration and as an insurance adjustor. He served as deputy county attorney for Silver Bow County from 1957-1960, assistant US. attorney (for Montana) from 1961-1965, and as Silver Bow County attorney from 1971-1974. He was the attorney for the Bert Mooney Airport from 1979-2003. Throughout most of this time, he also maintained a private law practice. He was a member of the Montana State Bar and the American Bar Association for over 50 years.
Larry was elected to the Montana House of Representatives and served three sessions (1961, 1967 and 1969) and was elected to the Montana Senate in 1979 and served seven sessions until 1992 when he chose not to run for re-election.
