Death of Mrs. Margaret P. Sapp.

On Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 9, 1897, Margaret P. Sapp laid down the burden of this life and took up the joys of that better existence beyond the grave. Her death was the result of an injury received by being thrown from a buggy on the 11th of last month.

Margaret Peyre Sapp is the daughter of Peyre Ferry (La Fere) who left Southern France when Napoleon was made Emperor and came to America, settling at Sandusky, Ohio, where she was born. He afterward moved to Monroe, Michigan, where another daughter, Julia, the sole survivor of the family, now occupies the old homestead. She was reared to womanhood in the Episcopal church, but in 1840 was united in marriage to Rev. Rezon Sapp, a Methodist minister, and then joined the Methodist church. Her husband was thirty-four years in the ministry and for fourteen years Presiding Elder of the Michigan conference. The result of this union was seven children, five of whom are still living: Dexter T., at Gunnison, Col., W. F., Edward E. and John R., at this place, and Chas. H., at Grand Rapids, Mich.

Rev. Thos. Pingry delivered an impressive funeral sermon at the home of John R. Sapp, Wednesday at 5 p. m., after which a large number of sympathizing friends followed the remains to the depot, where they were placed aboard the cars and, in charge of the three sons, W. F., E. E. and John R., were taken to Grand Rapids for interment beside the husband, who had preceded her to that home beyond the tide, 23 years ago.

Deceased was truly a grand woman, one of God's noble women, possessed of an intelligence far beyond the average, and, although seventy-five years of age, her mind had lost none of its brilliancy. A devout Christian - not in name alone, but in fact - a woman whom it was a pleasure to know, a privilege to call friend; a woman whose life was dedicated to God, husband, children and family; a wife who for 34 years walked side by side with a Christian husband, her peer in all things good and a God-given companion to so noble a helpmate; a devoted mother, whose loving kindness closed her eyes to all faults in her children; who thought no sacrifice too great, if it had for its object their welfare; a sister, who could never grow old enough to loosen the heart grasp of the sister to whom she sent a loving message with her last breath and to whom our heart goes out in earnest sympathy in this sorrowing hour, the darkest of her life, for it leaves her so sadly alone. "God can give us but one mother," says the old song. Blessed indeed is the child to whom He gives a good mother and the saddest hour of its life - whether it be tiny babe or mature man or woman - is when He takes her from them. We repeat: Deceased was a grand being in all that goes to make up true Christian womanhood. We cannot sound her praise too highly; we could fill columns with a recital of her noble qualities, but, in our opinion, they are all included in the words: A good mother.

She came here to visit her children and on the date above mentioned was in the act of stepping into the buggy for a drive with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. W. F. Sapp, when the horse started and she was thrown to the ground and her skull fractured. The best medical aid was employed, the most careful nursing exercised and all that devoted children and kind friends and professional knowledge could accomplish was done, but all was of no avail.

While her death was the result of an accident, no one with the semblance of a heart in their bosom or a grain of justice in their make-up can attach the blame to anyone. It was one of those unfortunate accidents that seem to point the hand of fate and to warn us to be ever ready, for no man knoweth when the summons will come.

To the children and the family, especially the aged sister, we extend the sympathy of this community, assuring them that we fully realize the extent of their sorrow in the loss of mother, sister, friend.
