Anthony D. "Tony" Alvaro, 85, of the Watson community, Fairmont, passed peacefully from this life in his home Friday (April 6, 2012) with his family by his side.
He was born in Four States on Jan. 8, 1927, a son of the late Frank and Rose (Nash) Alvaro.
Shortly thereafter, he moved to Watson, where he raised a family and remained for the rest of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rose (Police), who he married Aug. 18, 1951; two daughters, Terri Bonasso and her husband, Sam and Tina Shaw and her husband, Dave and one son, Frank J. Alvaro. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Daniel, Sammy, Sarah and Tressa Bonasso, Gary, Joseph, Andy and Michael Shaw and Anthony and Anna Alvaro; in addition to one sister, Nellie Giorcelli; one brother, Frank Alvaro and his wife, Lauranne and four sisters-in-law, Marilyn and Betty Alvaro and Joyce and Nancy Police.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Anthony J. Alvaro, who passed away in 2007; two brothers, Larry and Mickey Alvaro and three sisters, Evelyn Bowers, Teresa Bruno and Mary Gerba. He was also preceded by seven brothers-in-law, Joe Burno, Eugene Giorcelli, Raymond Gerba, Jess Bowers and Louie, Johnny and Bill Police and two sisters-in-law, Sarah and Christina Police. Several nieces and nephews also preceded him in death.
Alvaro retired from the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in 1995 after 45 years of service. Joining the VA in March 1951, he served in several positions until promoted to assistant chief of medical administration in 1975 and further promoted to chief in 1977. He received extensive training in the field of medical records and administration, patient care, supervisory techniques and management and labor. Alvaro was honored with the Meritorious Service Award from the Amvets Organization in 1972 and a national citation for distinguished service in 1974. He also received the highest honor that can be bestowed by the Department of Veterans Affairs for his contribution to veterans' programs in West Virginia in 1975. He was cited by the governor on two occasions: for meritorious service in 1975 and as a "Distinguished West Virginian" in 1976. He served as the POW coordinator at the VA and was made an honorary member of the Barbed-Wire Mountaineer Chapter 1, West Virginia Ex-Prisoners of War on June 14, 1987. He was parade marshal of the Veterans Day Parade in 1984 and received the American Legion's highest national award in 1980. In addition, he received an invitation from the governor to serve on an advisory panel for the Columbus Quincentenary (1492-1992), a celebration of Columbus' discovery of America. Tony was a member of the four major service organizations, the Disabled American Veterans American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. He served as Grand Knight of the Marian Council No. 942 Knights of Columbus as well as a member of the Marian Assembly No. 2114 K. of C. 4th Degree. He organized and facilitated an annual special ceremony to honor POWs at the Knights of Columbus. He also served as recruitment chairman for many years. He spent his career honoring and fighting for veterans' rights and benefits. He advocated for veterans and spent long hours with U.S. senators and congressmen along with state and local elected officials to ensure that all veterans received proper treatment. Tony was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards and hunting.
His family has requested that memorial contributions be made in his name to: East Park Boys & Girls Club, 1025 Fairfax St., Fairmont, WV 26554, of which he was a member of the board.
Friends and family may call at Frey Home for Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday, from 1 - 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 - 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Knights of Columbus memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday and the rosary service will be at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at St. Anthony's Church in Watson at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Father Steve Joseph as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery with full military honors being presented by the Marion County Honor Guard and the U.S. Army
