He was among the founders of the Partito d'Azione. He was arrested in Rome on 1 March 1944, due a complaint of an informer, for his activities in the Resistance. He was brought at the Pensione Oltremare in Rome and he was subjected to such torture to undermine his body but not his spirit. It was useless to attempt to make him confess the identity of his fellow anti fascists even though, according to the testimonies of those who were imprisoned with him, the tortures that he received were such as to make his face swollen and almost unrecognizable. During his imprisonment he tried twice to commit suicide. On 20 March, he was then transferred to the roman prison of Regina Coeli and on March 24 he was murdered along with 335 other martyrs of Ardeatine massacre.
