United States Navy Vice Admiral. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1935 and for the next two years served aboard the battleship "USS Arizona". During World War II he was a submariner who led a series of successful combat patrols in the Pacific theatre including the delivery of ammunition to General Douglas MacArthur at Corregidor in the Philippine Islands. While at Corregidor he assisted in the removal of the negotiable reserves of the Philippine government in 1942 which included several tons of gold and silver. For his actions during this mission he was awarded the Silver Star. He was also awarded two additional Silver Stars for actions in the Pacific for sinking over 22,000 tons of enemy shipping and severely damaging over 31,000 tons. During the Korean War he was assigned to the command of naval operations where he worked in research and development. In 1955 he became the first Naval Attaché to West Germany and in 1962 was given command of Sub Flotilla One and was promoted to Rear Admiral. He next was assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency as Deputy Director and moved from there to command the South Atlantic Force in Puerto Rico. In 1968 he was promoted to Vice Admiral and returned to Washington DC where he was appointed Chief of Naval Intelligence and director of Command Support Systems. He retired in 1974. In addition to his three Silver Stars he earned the Distinguished Service Medal, the Navy Cross, the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star which was presented to him by General Douglas MacArthur.
