Your love and laughter
Filled our lives
Your memory is our keepsake
God has you in His keeping
But we have you in our hearts
Love from your wife, children, and grandchildren

Daniel Edward Dickinson was born on 28 July 1944, in Bay City, Michigan, to Wesley Harry and Laura Gladys Ida (Brenay) Dickinson. His family moved to Arizona when he was nine years old and he grew up there, attending grade school in Phoenix and high school in Peoria.

His father was a lay preacher and the family attended the Church of God (Holiness) in Surprise, Arizona and that is where he met the little girl who would eventually become his wife. Ellen was only 10 years old and Dan was 18 when they first met at a church event -- Dan did not pay any attention to her for the next seven years because she was just a little girl who was a friend to his sisters. But when his father died in 1968 he went home from the Navy to be with his family for the funeral and noticed 16 year-old Ellen Thompson for the first time. She was best friends with his younger sister so was at the house frequently. After he went back to his ship, they began corresponding through letters and he asked her if she would go out with him when he was able to get home again. Although her parents were concerned at the eight year age difference, they agreed to let her date him on the few weekends he was able to get home. They poured their thoughts on life to each other through letters and within three months he knew he wanted to marry her, proposing to her on 24 Aug 1968. They were young and wanted to be sure they were doing the right thing so were engaged for a year before they got married.

They were married at the Church of God (Holiness) in Surprise, Arizona, on 23 Aug 1969.

Dan served two enlistments in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S. Algol (AKA-54) for a brief time before volunteering for Vietnam and being placed aboard the U.S.S. Hickman County (LST-825) on which he served for a year in Vietnam. After his year in Vietnam was done he was transferred to the U.S.S. Prairie (AD-15) in San Diego, California. He began dating the girl who would become his wife during this time and decided to get out of the Navy at the end of his first enlistment in August 1969 to get married.

During the first few years of their marriage Dan worked in construction and in 1972 when the construction business was not doing well, he decided to re-enlist in the Navy, choosing to serve in the Seabees as a builder. He was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 4 where he served for four years. During his second year with NMBC 4, while his battalion was serving on the island of Diego Garcia and building a Naval hospital there, he was involved in an accident, falling eight feet and hitting his head on concrete blocks, causing a brain injury and excruciating headaches. After two years of severe migraines and many doctor visits in various Navy hospitals, Dan was given a medical retirement in November 1976. He suffered with severe migraine headaches for the rest of his life.

Dan and Ellen moved their family to Gravette, Arkansas in 1977 so that their children could attend a Bible School there. In 1980 they moved to Greenville, Michigan where Dan had family and he attended Montcalm Community College part-time, graduating with an Associates Degree in 1984. They moved back to Gravette, Arkansas in 1984 and lived in the Benton County area until his death.

Dan was a member of First Baptist Church, Siloam Springs, Arkansas and his funeral was held there on 16 Apr 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles Dickinson and Robert "Bob" Dickinson; and one sister, Phyllis "Jean" Doyle.
