Obituary from Kirksville Journal newspaper dated Jan 11, 1923: MACON CO. MAN DIES HERE FOLLOWING INJURY - John Thomas Downey, age 36, died here last Friday morning at the Grim Hospital as the result of injuries received on Wednesday night at his home at Economy, Mo. Downey was brought to Kirksville on Thursday morning in an unconscious condition with little hope of recovery, following an alleged assault by a man named Trowbridge on Wednesday night. Downey had been struck on the head with a brick, and his skull crushed, during a quarrel between the men. Trowbridge went to Macon following the affair and gave himself over to Sheriff Banta. The body was shipped to Atlanta for funeral services with burial in the Hopewell Cemetery [this is what the obit says, but apparently he was not buried in this cemetery] last Sunday. Downey is survived by his wife and two children.
